NOW & THEN - NEW CONCEPT MANUFACTURING
02/02/2007

New Concept Manufacturing began as New Concept Machine and Tool in 1985 in the basement of Tom Baughman’s home. The company has grown considerably, starting with three toolmakers to the current employee owned business employing 160 full time people with $17 million in sales annually.

New Concept Mfg. produces precision stampings, conventional moldings, insert moldings, reel to reel insert moldings and vertically integrated turnkey assemblies for the Telecommunication, Medical, Automotive, Commercial and Aerospace/Defense Industries. Included are computer connectors, medical devices, automotive sensors and mining components.

In the late 1980’s, New Concept applied for and was granted a $200,000 low interest Pennsylvania Capital loan through the Small Enterprise Development Company (SEDCO) allowing New Concept to purchase state of the art molding equipment for its present facility at 2315 S. Queen Street. With the new technology, New Concept expanded its capabilities, growing the business.

In January 2007, the York County Industrial Development Authority (YCIDA) issued $2,550,000 of tax-exempt debt to purchase a manufacturing facility. New Concept required funding to expand manufacturing because they had outgrown their 25,000 sq. ft. main building and their 12,000 sq. ft. second building. The growth of the company over the last 3 years has been impacted by the need for more space and the inefficiencies of two manufacturing locations. With the help of the YCIDA in acquiring the new 180,000 sq. ft. facility, they will not only continue their growth with current and new customers but will also add technologies to expand into new markets resulting in additional manufacturing jobs to York County. The company is now in the process of moving into the much larger facility in Emigsville, PA and plans to be operational by July 1, 2007. The new manufacturing plant will enable them to further increase their employment level, doubling their number of employees within five years.

“I believe the involvement of SEDCO and the YCIDA was beneficial not only in more attractive loan rates but also made us a better company through well thought out business planning. The products, services and people of these organizations have helped New Concept Mfg. grow from a single person start-up to its current employee owned company employing 160 with the intent to grow much larger.” Tom Baughman, President & CEO.
